Drag Kings

Drag Kings is a portrait-led project amplifying the voices and visibility of London’s growing drag king community. Through performance, photography, and sound, it explores a rich mix of ages, gender expressions, and cultural backgrounds—spotlighting kings in a drag landscape still dominated by queens. Inspired by The Drag King Book by Del LaGrace Volcano, along with works by Charlotte Abramow, Peter Hujar, and the exhibition Masculinities: Liberation through Photography, the project unpacks the aesthetics of drag king culture. From those who sharpen masculinity already present in their identity, to others who blur and remix gender with playfulness, Drag Kings maps a wide and evolving spectrum. Each portrait is paired with audio recorded as performers applied their makeup—inviting the viewer into their intimate pre-show rituals. The soundtrack includes Masculine Women! Feminine Men (1926) performed by Brent Would, honoring early male impersonators like Vesta Tilley, Ella Wesner, and Florence Hines. This is a celebration of transformation, resistance, and joy—of drag kings claiming space, history, and visibility.
