Visible Invisible

Visible Invisible is an intimate meditation on life, death, and the quiet beauty that exists in between. Inspired by Jo Spence’s The Final Project and Robert Houser’s Facing Chemo, this work challenges how illness is typically represented—shifting the focus from decline to vitality, from stigma to strength. At its heart is Robert, a 25-year-old living with cancer. Portrayed as a fashion model, he steps outside the usual visual language of sickness. Through striking portraits, the project reframes his experience—not as one defined by fragility, but by presence, dignity, and power. Medical objects like feeding tubes and medications appear not as props of pathology, but as part of the visual vocabulary of his world. Fabrics, plants, spiritual symbols, and handwritten messages from family and friends are layered into the imagery, creating a rich portrait of love, resilience, and faith. Illness often renders people invisible—bodies erased or reduced to symptoms. But Robert resists that erasure. He radiates beauty, agency, and life. Visible Invisible insists on being seen. This project invites viewers to rethink their perceptions of illness—not as an end, but as a deeply human state, full of contradictions and grace. It is a quiet act of resistance. A reminder that visibility can be a form of healing. That even in the hardest moments, there is still light, style, and spirit.
